Cooking with Kids - carameled apples (yum.yum.)

If you are like me, as soon as the first leaf begins falling from the trees, I am ready to begin making carameled apples. We have been making more of an effort to cook something together on each family day. Such a fun activity you can do together...and, if you've got picky kids like mine, it might encourage them to eat a wider variety of foods.
Recently, we were invited over to some friends, who also have young kids. I thought it would be fun to make carameled apples with the kids to bring to their house for dessert.
Step 1: Purchase some gloriously huge Honeycrisp Apples. There is no better apple on the planet. Like a moron, I didn't take a picture of them plain. :)
Step 2: Purchase a bag of caramel bits. Yes, you could make your own caramel, but are you crazy??!! You don't want to do that with kids. (think scalded fingers and candy thermometers. Ugg! :) If you want to keep the kids fingers busy, by all means get the caramels you have to unwrap.
Step 3: Pour in the milk and the caramels, let the kids stir away!! No licking the spoon, unless you enjoy scalding every taste bud off your tongue. :) Ask me how I know this? Mr. Happy Thumb (above) came away with a burnt fingertip. :)
Step 4: Once the caramel has fully melted, begin dipping your apples into the melted caramel. We used a spoon to get it high enough up on the sides.
Step 5: Dip in a variety of sprinkles, salted nuts, or (my personal favorite) coarse sea salt. Yes, Lord!!
(again, because I am so organized when cooking, burning fingers and stirring...I forgot to take a pic of the sprinkles. :)
Step 6: Try not to eat them all in one sitting.
Handy instructions:
Prep: Line a baking sheet with wax paper to set decorated carameled apples on. Dig through your drawers because you can't be so organized to have popsicle sticks, so get your hubby to get a wire cutter from the garage to cut off your super-long, scary, wooden skewers. Set out a huge variety of sprinkles. Wash and dry apples. Jab popsicle sticks into the apples.
Ingredients & supplies:
  • 1 bag of Caramel bits
  • 2 Tbs. milk
  • 8 - Popsicle sticks
  • 8 - x-lg Honeycrisp apples (or your favorite!)
  • Sprinkles &/or salted nuts
  • Wax paper
Directions: Add caramel bits and milk to medium saucepan. Keep stirring until all the caramel is melted. Turn off heat. Coat the apples thoroughly with caramel. Dip into your choice of assorted toppings. Before all the caramel starts sliding off the apples, looking like a pair of saggy tights around the apples base, pop those babies into the 'fridge for at least 15 minutes to firm up the caramel. Enjoy your gooey treat!!
